Thinking of moving to Australia on a working holiday visa?
See our tips and tricks below!
Before your arrive:
Apply for your WHV on the Australia Governments website.
Book your flights, Skyscanner is a great website to find the cheapest deal!
Start thinking about where you want to live, work and spend your Aussie life!
After your arrive:
Get yourself a SIM card, the first thing to do is grab a new sim from your local supermarket. This makes it easier to register for a bank account, call your new friends and of course use google maps!
Head to your local bank and set up a bank account. You’ll need your ID, an Aussie address, and some patience! You can order your card directly to the bank to collect but you will need to be in the same city for a few weeks while you wait for your card to arrive.
Register to apply for a Tax File Number (TFN) – you’ll need one if you’re planning on working. It can also save you paying too much tax if you open a bank account.
Depending on your circumstances and visa, you may be eligible for free or subsidised healthcare through Medicare.
If you are arriving in Sydney and Melbourne and don’t fancy your chances in a hostel, you’ll find it can be difficult to find long term accommodation. There are some great apps and Facebook groups you can use to find the right place. The flatmates app, is great for connecting with potential flatmates and finding your next home.
Finally, note down the Australia Emergency number which is 000.
fINDING YOUR FIRST ROLE:
As you are on a WHV you will be applying for temporary roles, recently the Australia government have removed restriction that used to only allow WHV makers to work 6 months only with one employer. This change came into effect on 19 January 2022 and will remain in place until 30 June 2023, read more here.
